Home-based Instruction (Homeschool)

Information Regarding Forms and Requirements

RCW28A.225.010 requires all parents of any child 8 years of age and under 18 years of age in this state to cause such children to attend the public school of the district in which the child resides.

A child can be excused from this requirement if they are receiving home-based instruction.  In order to home school a child the following requirements must be met:
1.  The parent must file annually a "Declaration of Intent" to provide home-based instruction form with the district.  The forms should be returned to:  Peninsula School District, Attention:  Claudia Thompson, 14015 62nd Ave NW, Gig Harbor, WA  98332.

Click here to  link to Declaration of Intent Form.

2.  The instructional and educational activities must be provided by a parent who has either earned 45 college-level credit hours or has completed a course in home-based instruction at a postsecondary institution or vocational-technical institute.
3.  Parent must ensure that an approved standardized test is administered annually to the child by a qualified individual or that an annual assessment of the student's academic progress is written.  Families can participate in school district testing if the district is testing at the student's grade level.  To participate in such testing, parents should contact the school in their home attendance area.
 4.  Parents are responsible for maintaining student's home school records and must ensure that this information is furnished to any public or private school in which the student may enroll.

Home schooled students may participate in courses or ancillary services that are available at their service area school. A Request for Part Time Attendance or Ancillary Services Form must be completed by the parent to participate in these courses/activities.  Any transportation needs beyond the regularly scheduled district bus routes are the responsibility of the parent.

High School Credit for Home School Courses

The following procedures shall be followed for consideration of granting of high school credit for home school experience:

    • The student requesting high school credit must be or have been a legally identified home school student with appropriate forms on file with the school district.
    • The parent and student shall meet with the building principal or his/her designee to develop an agreed upon educational plan prior to the completion of home school credits.  The principal has the right to deny home school credits completed without prior approval;
    • For each course of study, the student may be asked to provide to the school:
      A journal which reflects the actual work completed during a home school course of study;
      Exhibits of any specific projects completed (e.g. themes, research papers, art and/or shop projects);
      Any performance-based exhibits of specific course-related
