Media Material Procedures

If you would like to show a rated-R movie in your classroom, the following procedure must be followed:

  1. In a timely manner, the requesting teacher(s) submits a supplemental materials form to the  building principal and indicates on the form that the movie is rated “R."

  2. The requesting teacher(s) and building principal establish a mutually agreeable date to meet with a building level team. This team will be comprised of the requesting teacher(s), the building principal, the Director of Instructional Technology, the building’s Instructional Advisory Committee representative or department chair, and at least one parent.  All participants at the meeting will be involved in the final decision. If approved, all team members will sign the supplemental materials form and forward it to the Director of Instructional Technology for documentation.
If this team fails to reach consensus, the request will go to the Instructional Advisory Committee for final action.

  3. Following approval, the classroom teacher(s) is required to send home a parent permission letter outlining how the film will support the instructional unit and how the film will increase the student’s understanding of the subject.  A signed letter of agreement must be received back from the parent before the student can view the film.  Any student over 18 years of age may sign the permission letter on their own provided that they believe their decision to view the material would be supported by their parents.

  4. For students not allowed to see the movie, the teacher must provide a meaningful alternative educational experience that meets needed requirements for success on the course syllabus. Student’s grades will not be negatively impacted by a parent’s refusal to have their child participate in the movie activity.

  5. As long as the requesting teacher(s) uses the approved movie for its stated purpose, he/she does not need to reapply for permission each time the movie is shown.  However, he/she must get parent permission before every showing.

  6. This approval is valid only for the requesting teacher(s) and only for its stated purpose.
