Air Quality Concerns and School For Remainder of Week Graphic

Dear PSD Staff and Families,

Because of the forecast of continuing poor air quality in our area due to smoke from wildfires, all PSD schools and buildings will be closed to the public and most staff will work remotely through the end of this week. We fully expect to resume normal building activity on Monday, Sept. 21.

In order to keep smoke out of our schools and buildings, we need to turn off our fresh air intake systems, which is the opposite of what we have been instructed to do to protect students and staff from exposure to COVID-19. For more details, please refer to the linked letter from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

School will continue to be conducted remotely. If your student was scheduled to attend school in a small group this week, instruction will instead be provided remotely. If you had a meeting scheduled at your school or PSD office, please call your school to reschedule.

We will provide student meals the rest of the week, including weekend meals on Friday, although not via bus delivery. Meals can be picked up at three locations:

  • Evergreen Elementary;
  • Purdy Elementary; and
  • Gig Harbor High School.

YMCA Daycare at Harbor Heights Elementary and Purdy Elementary will be canceled the rest of the week.

We appreciate your understanding. Please stay safe and be well.

Thank you,
PSD Leadership
