Monday, Sept. 14 Air Quality Concerns Graphic

Dear PSD Staff and Families,

As you are aware, smoke from wildfires in the region is greatly affecting our air quality. In a bulletin issued by the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department this afternoon, school personnel are asked to regularly monitor outdoor air quality to ensure student safety. In addition, the Washington Department of Health recommends all outdoor activities be canceled.

In order to keep smoke out of our schools and buildings, we need to turn off our fresh air intake systems, which is the opposite of what we have been instructed to do to protect students and staff from exposure to COVID-19.

Due to this contradiction, all PSD schools and buildings will be closed to the public and most staff will work remotely tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 14. School will continue to be conducted remotely. If your student was scheduled to attend school in a small group on Monday, instruction will instead be provided remotely.  We need to minimize the number of people in our buildings to the greatest extent possible. If you had a meeting scheduled at your school or PSD office, please call on Tuesday to reschedule.

We are still able to provide student meals tomorrow, although not via bus delivery. Meals can be picked up at three locations:

  • Evergreen Elementary;
  • Purdy Elementary; and
  • Gig Harbor High School.

YMCA Daycare at Harbor Heights Elementary and Purdy Elementary is canceled tomorrow.

As soon as we have a decision about school for Tuesday, Sept.15, we will let you know. We appreciate your understanding. Please stay safe and be well.

Thank you,
PSD Leadership
