Air Quality Concerns and School for Tuesday, Sept. 15

Dear PSD Staff and Families,

With the continuation of poor air quality in our area due to smoke from wildfires, all PSD schools and buildings will again be closed to the public and most staff will work remotely tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 15.

In order to keep smoke out of our schools and buildings, we need to turn off our fresh air intake systems, which is the opposite of what we have been instructed to do to protect students and staff from exposure to COVID-19. For more details, please refer to the linked letter from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

School will continue to be conducted remotely. If your student was scheduled to attend school in a small group on Tuesday, instruction will instead be provided remotely. If you had a meeting scheduled at your school or PSD office, please call on Wednesday to reschedule.

We will provide student meals tomorrow, although not via bus delivery. Meals can be picked up at three locations:

  • Evergreen Elementary;
  • Purdy Elementary; and
  • Gig Harbor High School.

YMCA Daycare at Harbor Heights Elementary and Purdy Elementary will be canceled tomorrow.

We will continue to closely monitor air quality. As soon as we have a decision about Wednesday, Sept. 16, it will be communicated.

We appreciate your understanding. Please stay safe and be well.

Thank you,
PSD Leadership
