Pioneer Elementary is Peninsula School District's first Magnet School

In June 2019, the district finalized the purchase of the facility that became Pioneer Elementary from the Boys & Girls Club of South Puget Sound. Minor tenant improvements were made during the summer of 2019 and the facility opened as a district-owned site in August 2019. For the 2019-2020 school year, four 5th grade classrooms from Discovery Elementary and four preschool classrooms were housed in the building.

An approximate 39,000 sq. ft addition was made to the building and existing interior space was modified to create a 30 classroom, full-size elementary school. Pioneer is the ninth elementary school to open in the district.

The Pioneer Elementary School project was the first school completed out of four elementary school construction projects, and six projects overall, funded by the 2019 capital projects bond. The bond was passed by voters, approving school construction to address extreme elementary school overcrowding and other emergency infrastructure needs.

Pioneer became the first new elementary school to be added to the district in 34 years when it opened for students on January 19, 2021. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on February 24, 2021.

As a magnet school with a science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) emphasis, enrollment is open to all students in the district.

Pioneer Principal Stephanie Strader

It's been three years since the doors of Pioneer Elementary opened to the students. The first new school in Peninsula School District in 34 years and we are grateful for the opportunities it has afforded us. Throughout our learning experiences, students have been challenged to solve problems, collaborate with peers, and develop empathy and understanding for perspectives different than theirs. As a staff, we continue to learn and grow so the experiences we provide our students are relevant and authentic to the world around them. We have big plans for the future and look forward to including our community in our dreams!
