Pilot #1: February 1 - March 5

In our first pilot, each grade band will be working with a different curriculum option.  Grades 6-8 will pilot Discovery, grades 10-11 will pilot Savvas, and grade 12 will pilot Houghton Mifflin.  At the start of the feedback window, surveys will be sent out to parents, students, and teachers to gather feedback.  That window will close at the end of the day on March 5th.  Throughout the pilot, we will be holding additional focus groups to gather feedback from as many student voices as possible, as well as open houses for parents and community members.  The dates of those open houses are listed on the calendar below.

Pilot #2: March 8 - April 2

In our second pilot, both the middle school and high school grade bands will pilot the same curriculum option: TCI.  At the start of the feedback window, surveys will be sent out to parents, students, and teachers to gather feedback.  That window will close at the end of the day on March 8th.  Throughout the pilot, we will be holding additional focus groups to gather feedback from as many student voices as possible, as well as open houses for parents and community members.  The dates of those open houses are listed on the calendar below.

The Middle School Social Studies Adoption Committee met on November 4, 2020 after not meeting since February of 2020. As we continue the work of the Secondary Social Studies Adoption, we grounded ourselves in the agreements around voting participation and consensus. The team spent time sharing passions around social studies instruction as well as needs/interest of the students. As we start reviewing various core resources, the team dug into the PSD Social Studies Curriculum Prescreening Rubric. Prior to November 18th, committee members will share the current list of possible core, corresponding, and supplemental resources with their department colleagues to ensure that all possible resources are being reviewed. Between Wednesday’s meeting and November 24th, committee members will use the Pre Screening Rubric to review three core resources and one corresponding resource. The next meeting for the Middle School Social Studies Adoption Committee is Wednesday, December 2, 2020.

The Middle School Social Studies Adoption Committee met on December 2, 2020, to discuss the data associated with the prescreening work that was completed by the team in the last month. Eight core resources were reviewed by committee members using the PSD Social Studies Curriculum Prescreening Rubric. Two of those resources were specific to 7th grade Washington State History. After a thorough and thoughtful evaluation of the data as well as committee members’ experiences through the prescreening process, the committee came to a consensus on inviting vendor presentations from TCI, Discovery, Savvas, and McGraw-Hill. The 7th grade teachers will dig further into the Washington State Journey text. The next middle school committee meeting will be Wednesday, January 6, 2021 to attend vendor presentations from TCI, Discovery, Savvas, and McGraw-Hill.

The Middle School team met on January 6th to hear vendor presentations from Discovery, McGraw, Savvas, and TCI.  Team members asked questions and discussed each of the options.

Teachers came to consensus and selected Discovery and TCi to pilot.  They will complete a survey asynchronously in preparation for the upcoming pilot.  The committee will meet again on January 20th to outline the scope of the pilot.  If you’re not on the committee, and you’re interested in piloting - we’d love to have you!  Here’s a survey regarding the pilot - please fill it out if you’re interested in joining us!

Secondary Social Studies teachers pilot materials in their classrooms. 

The Middle School Social Studies Adoption Committee met on Tuesday, April 6th to review data collected during the adoption and pilot process.  We had an awesome dialogue in the consensus meeting weighing the options of Discovery and TCI.  The data for both curricula was very close and the committee engaged in deep discussion on the pros and cons of each.  In the end, the committee reached consensus to recommend Discovery for grades 6-8.  Now, this recommendation will be taken to the Instructional Advisory Committee (IAC) on April 20th, and then to the School Board, for both a first (May 13) and second (May 27) reading.  As we await School Board approval, we will initiate an exploration of implementation plans.  If you have any questions about the selection process or are interested in participating in implementation planning, please contact Ashley Stolhand at DLI.  

The Instructional Advisory Committee (IAC) met Tuesday, April 20, 2021 and approved the Secondary Social Studies Committee's recommendation to adopt Since Time and Immemorial and Discovery Education as the district adopted curriculum for grades 6, 7, & 8 Social Studies. The next step is to take the committee's recommendation and IAC's approval to the School Board for a first reading on Thursday, April 22, 2021 and a second reading on Thursday, May 27, 2021.

The High School Social Studies Adoption Committee met on October 28, 2020 after not meeting since February of 2020. As we continue the work of the Secondary Social Studies Adoption, we grounded ourselves in the agreements around voting participation and consensus. The team spent time sharing passions around social studies instruction as well as needs/interest of the students. The committee also discussed the correlation between course offerings as they stand today and a further discussion that is needed around course offerings that align with the WA State Social Studies standards. As we start reviewing various core resources, the team dug into the PSD Social Studies Curriculum Prescreening Rubric. Prior to November 11th, committee members will share the current list of possible core, corresponding, and supplemental resources with their department colleagues to ensure that all possible resources are being reviewed. Between Wednesday’s meeting and November 24th, committee members will use the Pre Screening Rubric to review three core resources and one corresponding resource. The next meeting for the High School Social Studies Adoption Committee is Wednesday, December 9, 2020.

The HS School Social Studies Adoption Committee met on December 9, 2020, to discuss the data associated with the prescreening work that was completed by the team in the last month. Five core resources were reviewed by committee members using the PSD Social Studies Curriculum Prescreening Rubric. After a thorough and thoughtful evaluation of the data as well as committee members’ experiences through the prescreening process, the committee came to a consensus on inviting vendor presentations from TCI, Savvas, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and McGraw-Hill. The next high school committee meeting will be Wednesday, January 13, 2021 to attend vendor presentations from TCI, Savvas, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and McGraw-Hill.   

Regarding course options, district administrators feel strongly that students continue to have choice when filling their social studies requirements. There is an interest in ensuring that Contemporary World Problems as an elective at both comprehensive high schools. We will move toward offering Human Geography at 9th grade at both high schools. The next step would be for discussion to place within each high school via the SITE/SIP teams. We are looking for a couple of individuals to work with Ashley on writing a course proposal for Human Geography that could be taken to IAC in January. 

The High School Social Studies Adoption Committee met on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 to hear vendor presentations from HMH, McGraw, Savvas, and TCI.  Team members asked questions and discussed each of the options.

Teachers came to consensus and selected the following curriculum to pilot in the coming months:

10th Grade: Savvas, TCI
11th Grade: Savvas, TCI
12th Grade: HMH, TCI
