Celebrate National School Lunch Hero Day on May 1

School Lunch Hero Day, which is May 1, provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million students nationwide each school day. Between preparing delicious food, adhering to nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, Peninsula School District nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate.

“School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity for the community to thank our hardworking heroes for their dedication to fueling our students for success,” said Katie Watland, Nutrition Services General Manager. “School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools.”
On May 1, school nutrition professionals across the district will be honored and recognized by students and staff for their hard work and commitment. School Lunch Hero Day was founded in 2013 by children's book author Jarrett J. Krosoczka, in partnership with the School Nutrition Association.
Federal nutrition standards ensure school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day.
“In Peninsula School District, we serve more than 9,000 students and offer various healthy offerings like Washington grown apples and vegetables,” said Watland. “We want all students to have access to nutritious and delicious food that will power their potential.”
