Skilled & Technical Sciences – Career & Technical Education

Peninsula School District’s Skilled & Technical Sciences CTE program offers students hands-on, project-based learning that builds technical expertise, creativity, and problem-solving—skills essential for success in today’s competitive job market.

Students begin their exploration in middle school through introductory courses such as Intro to ManufacturingMultimedia, and Desktop Publishing: Yearbook. In high school, they can pursue a wide variety of specialized courses across all three comprehensive high schools, including:

  • Architecture & Interior Design

  • Manufacturing 1

  • Digital Photography and Graphic Design

  • Technical Theater (Lights, Sound, and Construction)

  • Video Production

  • Navy Science and Navy Drill

  • Apprenticeship

  • College, Career, & Financial Exploration

Additional specialized electives include Jewelry/Metal Sculpture and Video Game Design (offered at Gig Harbor High School), Forensics and Textiles & Apparel (available at Henderson Bay High School), and Manufacturing 2 at Peninsula High School.

From the stage to the workshop, classroom to computer lab, students in this program gain valuable experience with industry tools and technologies while preparing for careers in fields like engineering, architecture, digital media, theater production, advanced manufacturing, and the skilled trades.

Whether entering the workforce, pursuing technical training, or heading to college, students graduate from the Skilled & Technical Sciences CTE pathway with real-world knowledge, a professional portfolio, and a head start on in-demand careers.

Projected Growth & Industry Demand

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects robust demand for skilled trades and technical roles over the next decade:

  • Construction & Extraction Occupations are expected to grow faster than average from 2023 to 2033, with approximately 663,500 job openings per year due to growth and worker turnover.

  • Production Occupations (e.g., machinists, fabricators) will still yield about 970,100 annual openings resulting from replacements and transitions.

  • High‑growth renewable energy occupations, such as wind turbine service technicians (↑ 60%) and solar photovoltaic installers (↑ 48%), signal demand for technical skills in electrical and technical trades through 2033.

  • Within industries, professional, scientific, and technical services (which include architectural design, engineering support, and media/graphic design) are expected to grow by 10.5% from 2023 to 2033—more than double the average across all sectors. Computer systems design and related services within that industry may grow by nearly 19.5% .

PSD’s Skilled & Technical Sciences CTE program is strategically aligned with growing job sectors that value technical expertisecreativity, and hands-on experience. Whether students are drawn to architecture, digital media, renewable energy trades, manufacturing, or theatrical production, our portfolio of courses supports future-ready learning and meaningful career pathways.
