Skilled Trade: Manufacturing
Projected Growth & Industry Demand
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects strong, steady demand for skilled trades, construction, and technical roles through 2034:
- Construction and Extraction Occupations are expected to see about 649,300 openings each year, on average, due to employment growth and the need to replace workers who leave the occupations permanently.
- Carpenters are projected to grow 4% (as fast as average) with about 74,100 openings projected each year. The typical path into the trade is a high school diploma followed by an apprenticeship.
- Industrial Machinery Mechanics, Maintenance Workers, and Millwrights, who install, maintain, and repair factory equipment and other industrial machinery, are projected to grow 13 percent from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 54,200 openings projected each year.
- Installation, Maintenance, and Repair Occupations overall are projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2024 to 2034, with about 608,100 openings projected each year.
